• Nik Khashu will take over as CEO at Warrington and Halton Hospitals from August
  • The position is interim for up to two years as the trust discusses possible merger with a community provider

An NHS England finance boss has been appointed chief executive of an acute trust in the North West.

Nik Khashu will take over as chief executive officer at Warrington and Halton Hospitals in August, initially on an interim basis for up to two years.

Mr Khashu is the director of finance for the North West regional directorate, although he is currently on secondment to NHS England’s national team, as deputy chief finance officer.

He will replace Simon Constable at WHH, who is moving to University Hospitals of North Midlands.

The position is interim for up to two years because WHH is discussing integration opportunities with Bridgewater Community Healthcare, with a view to appointing a permanent chief for both trusts and an eventual merger.

Mr Khashu will remain formally employed by the regional directorate, on secondment to WHH. Prior to the regional team, he worked at St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals.

Trust chair Steve McGuirk said in a statement: “I’m pleased that from a very strong field of candidates, we have appointed Nik to be our chief executive.

“His unwavering focus on quality, patient care and staff experience shone through. I’m confident that his background and leadership style will be a huge asset, not just to us at WHH but across the wider health and care system.

“I would like to thank all those involved in the recruitment process, including external partners, governors, non-executive and executive directors. It was certainly robust and has resulted in the appointment of an exceptional candidate.”

Mr Khashu said: “I am absolutely thrilled to be appointed to lead Warrington and Halton Hospitals, in what is sure to be a highlight of my career. Having lived in Warrington for 20 years, I have a very personal connection to the area and to the hospitals’ services.”
