FINANCE: West Suffolk Foundation Trust finished the year with a surplus of £619,000 - below the planned surplus of £1m.

It was helped by an agreement with the PCT on how penalties around A&E admission were to be measured which reduced the level of the penalties by around £600,000.

Overspend on pay for the year was £2.6m and the trust is now looking to speed up recruitment when a consultant retires or resigns and a replacement is approved, and cut back on locum spend in such cases.
