Caroline Flint, who was a Labour MP until 2019, will take on the role at Humber Teaching Foundation Trust for an initial term of three years in September.

Ms Flint served as an MP for 22 years before losing her seat. She was a minister in five government departments, including minister for public health between May 2005 and June 2007, as well as part of the shadow Cabinet from 2010 to 2015. She was also the first female MP for Don Valley.

She will succeed current trust chair Sharon Mays, who is leaving the trust after seven years and completing two terms as chair.

Ms Flint said: “During the current period of significant challenge for the NHS, it is a critical time to take on the post and I feel privileged to be able to play my part to support the health and wellbeing of the communities we serve.”

Trust chief executive Michele Moran said Ms Flint’s expertise and experience would be valuable, adding: “I look forward to working with her at an important time for the NHS and for our organisation.”

Meanwhile, Ms Mays described her time on the trust board as an honour and said she was looking forward to working with Ms Flint during the transition period.

Ms Moran said: “I would like to extend my sincerest thanks to Sharon Mays for two terms of leadership, which has put us in a great position to build on the progress we’ve made over the last seven years.”
