• Sonia Patel appointed NHSX CIO
  • Follows departure of Will Smart as NHSE’s CIO last year
  • Ms Patel currently joint CIO for London North West University Healthcare FT and The Hillingdon Hospitals FT

NHSX has appointed a new chief information officer, HSJ has learned.

Several sources have told HSJ that joint CIO for London North West University Healthcare Foundation Trust and The Hillingdon Hospitals FT Sonia Patel will take on the top digital role in the summer.

She will work with NHSX chief executive Matthew Gould and chief clinical information officer Simon Eccles to deliver the organisation’s digital ambitions, as set out in the long-term plan.

Previously, Ms Patel spent three years as CIO in Westminster Primary Care Trust and a year as head of solutions delivery at NHS commissioning support for London. She also worked for consultancy firm iSMART for three years, where she held various senior digital roles for the health sector.

Ms Patel will take over from NHS England’s former chief information officer Will Smart, who left the role in September last year to join global firm DXC Technology.

HSJ approached NHSX for comment on the appointment, including details on Ms Patel’s start date.
