Ron Kerr, chief executive at Guys and St Thomas’ Foundation Trust has been knighted in the New Years Honours list.

Sir Ron, whose NHS career spans almost 40 years, topped a long list of professionals and voluinteers recognised for services to healthcare and medicine.

Ian Dalton, chief executive of the North East Strategic Health Authority, who was seconded to the DH last year as national director of the flu resilience programme and again this year to oversee development of the new provider programme including design of the new regulatory regime was awarded an Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE).

Other DH faces recognised for their contribution were Bob Ricketts director of system management and new enterprise (CBE), as well as Peter Baker, security vetting officer, and Sally Bishop, private secretary at the research and development directorate who were both awarded MBEs.

Chairman of Guy’s and St Thomas’ Patricia Moberly, said: “We are absolutely delighted to learn of Sir Ron’s Knighthood. 

“This is a richly deserved personal award that honours his lifetime of commitment to the National Health Service. Ron will say, quite rightly, that this distinction recognises also the achievements of the Trust and other organisations under his leadership. 

“Ron is ambitious for our success and we all share in his passionate desire to provide the best possible service for patients.

Professor Michael Cooke, chief executive of Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, was awarded a CBE for services to mental health, while Bruce Armstrong, consultant nurse and emergency planning officer at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Foundation Trust, and Margaret Berry, director of quality and executive nurse at NHS Luton were awarded OBEs. David Pearson, executive director of clinical governance and nursing, North Staffordshire Combined Healthcare NHS Trust, was recognised with an MBE.

Kay Sheldon, a commissioner with the Care Quality Commission, was also recognised with an OBE.
