Stephen Eames is to step down from North Cumbria Integrated Care FT once a replacement has been found.

He already acts as “system lead” for the North Cumbria health economy, but he will become its executive lead.

The trust said it will appoint someone who can provide a “clear focus on driving the new organisation forward”, but Professor Eames confirmed he will remain in his role until an appointment has been made.

He said: “I’m extremely proud of the progress we’ve made since I joined the NHS in Cumbria in January 2016, and I remain very committed to working in Cumbria.

“Over the past year, we’ve made some vital changes to how we deliver services in Cumbria which are already benefitting our local communities and staff, including the introduction of integrated care communities and the merger of two provider trusts. It’s important this work now makes further progression, which I will oversee in my new position.”

Professor Eames, who has held chief executive positions within the NHS for more than 30 years, was awarded a CBE in the Queen’s 2019 birthday honours.

He was previously the chief executive of both Cumbria Partnership and North Cumbria University Hospitals foundation trusts, prior to their merger on 1 October.
