I agree this needs saying and repeating on a frequent basis to prevent unthinking or malicious criticism and political grandstanding from clouding rational judgement. While the functions supporting clinical care should be efficient and effective, there is a great danger of losing babies in the bathwater. There is also a need to be clear about functions that directly support clinicians and therefore should be regarded, in a sense, as part of the clinical workforce.

Clarity is needed both to allow effective planning for the future and overcome nugatory comment. Perhaps HSJ could help by providing a forum to allow for new ways of presenting the value of these functions.
