STRUCTURE: A new teenage cancer unit has opened at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.
The 11-bed unit will be the principal treatment centre for 14- to 24-year-olds with cancer in East Anglia.
The unit was mainly funded by the Teenager Cancer Trust, which raised £2.9m of the £3.7m cost.
This money has created a “home from home” environment with a “social zone”, parents’ room, chill out room and learning centre.
Dr Helen Hatcher, consultant oncologist at Cambridge University Hospitals Foundation Trust, said: “Evidence shows that a dedicated unit staffed by specialist consultants and nurses results in better survival rates and faster recovery.”
