Buried next to a New England Journal of Medicine study about a technique for communicating with patients in a vegetative state, blah blah blah, is a far more significant development: scientists believe they have uncovered the first ever Wii Fit fracture.
Clinician Karen Eley of Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals Trust reported seeing an otherwise healthy 14 year old girl with a small fracture to her metatarsal having fallen from the balance board of her Nintendo Wii Fit. While there have been numerous reports of head injuries, falls, dislocations, and even a painful thumb condition dubbed “Nintendinitis”, there appear to be no previous records of fractures. Balance boards are some two inches off the ground, reports Dr Eley. Next week, HSJ investigates how many fractures have been suffered after falling from other two inch high platforms.
