We had Jim Easton, CEO of South Central SHA, talking about leadership to 85 of our managers at a network event last Friday.  His advice to managers was:

  • learn to listen and get feedback
  • be present in the world you lead
  • learn how to know your own mind

He says the test of leadership is not what you do when things are going well, but what you do when it all goes wrong. Wise words.

Also speaking was Peter Lees, Medical Director & Director of Leadership for South Central SHA.  He challenged managers who had not yet read Darzi’s Next Stage Review and talked about the 12 leadership commitments. Know what they are? Go and look it up!

I’m looking out of my window across Portsmouth to Pompey’s Fratton ground and reflecting on how the population of Portsmouth felt when they won the cup last year – and how the club are doing right now.  There’s no doubt that leadership has a huge part to play in the success of any organisation – but leadership can be found at all levels of organisations, not just at the top.

If you haven’t read “Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway” by Susan Jeffers (Arrow Books) it has a 10 step positive thinking process and urges readers to risk a little every day. It’s out of print but the good news is you can still get hold of it!

Try  www.BookMooch.com. It’s a website where you can exchange books you no longer want with books you do want.  The definition of “Mooch” is “to obtain something without paying for it or to borrow something without intending to return it.”  Post 10 books on the site and you will have earned a point to ask for a book from someone else, and every time you send a book to someone else, you earn another point.

Another good site is www.readitswapit.co.uk – this one works on exchanging books with another member.

What good books have you read – and what websites do you recommend?
