Worried about crime? Never fear, the NHS Counter Fraud Service has swooped on a criminal network operating at the very heart of the health service.

The vice crackdown last week saw its fourth conviction, a foreign national who fraudulently obtained £20,000 of taxpayers’ money.

On what did this miscreant spend his ill gotten gains? Guns? Heroin? No, he put it towards his nursing training.

His case follows that of a fellow Zimbabwean who used a false passport to gain an NHS nursing bursary. Did the fiendish fraudster snatch the money and disappear into the night?

Not exactly. After her nursing training she lived a glamorous criminal existence working with drug addicts at Holloway Prison, where she was later arrested before being thrown in jail for a year.

Not quite The Wire, is it?
