Government press releases are usually unflinchingly positive.
But one from the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills last week broke the mould, announcing: “A third of medical and health service workers haven’t learnt something new in the past year”.
It turns out this doesn’t actually mean that, despite countless development opportunities, NHS employees have somehow failed to learn anything over the past year.
But a third have not taken up a new hobby, while 9 per cent have not read a book for pleasure (it doesn’t specify whether this includes weighty DH tomes).
However, more than half were enthusiastic about starting a new activity, with photography coming top, followed by dance, meaning that after a relatively quiet week at least unofficial hip hop tsar Gillian Merron has something to cheer.
