A firm that designs aircraft cabins has turned its attentions to the NHS, creating a recovery “lounge” that fits - or should that be that crams? - more beds in while requiring fewer nurses.

We all know the NHS is obsessed with the airline industry - the patient safety lot never stop talking about it. But after an HSJ reporter came across a “ward hostess” on a recent hospital visit, have things gone too far?

While staff productivity is higher up the agenda than ever, the NHS probably does not want to copy the cost-cutting strategies of a well known airline if it values its industrial relations. End Game certainly cannot imagine doctors rushing to step in to take over from striking healthcare assistants.

Let’s just hope for patients’ sake that if the recovery unit design does take off - excuse the pun - it’s more first class, less cattle class.
