Health economies in the North and Midlands are seeing rising or persistently high covid-19 case rates while a health system in the South West is showing a notable increase in cases.

HSJ’s analysis of Public Health England’s covid-19 case data shows most health systems have declining or steady case rates. The proliferation of local authority areas where new local lockdown restrictions were applied last night are having a varied impact on the case rates in their wider health systems.

Greater Manchester has seen an increase in the number of cases, rising from a daily average of over 3 per 100,000 people per day to nearly 6 per 100,000. This is being driven by outbreaks in Manchester and Oldham.

The rise in cases in the Black Country is centred around the large urban conurbation of Sandwell and Birmingham.

Across the Pennines, West Yorkshire is showing a consistently high case rate while the South Yorkshire rate fell in recent weeks and appears to have plateaued at between 3 and 4 cases per 100,000 people per day.

The hospitals in the South West region of England have gone a week without a reported covid death. However, the Bath and North East Somerset health system is seeing a rise in cases apparently linked to outbreaks in several businesses in the patch.
