STRUCTURE: The joint board of NHS County Durham and Darlington will consider a proposal to consolidate a single site for hyperacute stroke services at the University Hospital of North Durham at a board meeting to be held in public on 1 November.

It follows a consultation on service changes, affecting County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust, which have been controversial.

The review examined the whole stroke pathway from stroke prevention right through to rehabilitation care offered after discharge from hospital and looked to identify where things needed to change.

The need for greater direct admission to stroke services was highlighted together as well as concerns about the sustainability of the current hospital model of hyperacute services across two hospital sites. Clinicians and managers then looked at a series of options, and put forward a preferred option for change.

The joint board are expected to discuss and consider the findings of the consultation and the case for change which will be presented at the meeting.
