SERVICE DESIGN: Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is using the ideas of its front line staff to try and help reduce patients’ feeling of isolation.

Using ‘crowdsourcing’, the project allowed staff of all levels to act as patient ambassadors.

Using a secure social-media style website called ‘Patient & Family Echo’ they anonymously submitted ideas for improvement, and voted for the best.

Working in partnership with the Local Involvement Network (LINks) in Dorset, DCH discovered that patients in side rooms often felt isolated, at times disorientated and didn’t always understand why they were in the rooms.

In response to the findings the trust ran a three-week ‘Patient & Family Echo’ campaign called “The Side Rooms Project” in December last year to engage all staff members who serve the rooms.
