COMMERCIAL: Two of the linear accelerators at Mount Vernon Cancer Centre are being replaced by state of the art machines at a cost of £3.7m. The new equipment is able to deliver intensity modulated radiation therapy which can provide more accurate treatment and reducing side-effects.
The investment – together with the conversion of one of the older machines to provide IMRT – will enable the centre, run by East and North Herts Trust, to treat many more patients with the therapy. As well as being more targeted and lessening damage to surrounding tissues, treatment time can be reduced to just t3wo minutes.
