PERFORMANCE: East Kent Hospitals University Foundation Trust managed to treat 91 per cent of patients in A&E within four hours in April – despite coming under severe pressure which caused the trust to declare an internal major incident.

A report to May’s board meeting says declaring the incident – which meant some non-essential activities were cancelled to concentrate staff resources on A&E – may have prevented a worse result.

The trust has now developed an emergency department recovery plan but the report warns that April’s performance will make it hard to achieve the 95 per cent standard for quarter one.

There were also seven occasions when ambulances were unable to handover patients for more than an hour.
