The Healthcare Commission report into emergency care raised serious concerns about communication between providers in the new emergency care landscape. Much of this could be mitigated by better access to the NHS care records service.
Many people are against the service on the grounds of privacy, but this data is essential to allow proper informed care that would enable out of hours and emergency services to function well. This report recognises the need to provide integration to make emergency care work effectively.
It can be done: we have produced a web portal for an out of hours provider's patient administration system to link in GPs and other care providers. This can then be connected into the NHS spine to give secure access to the care records service.
As the report acknowledges, effective information sharing is central to ensuring emergency care meets patients' changing needs.
