PERFORMANCE: Heatherwood and Wexham Park Foundation Trust has commissioned an external review of its theatre usage after capacity pressures led to a high rate of cancelled planned operations.

A South Reading clinical commissioning group board report said the trust has brought in a firm called Newton to support a programme looking at efficiency in operating theatres.

June board papers said the rate of cancelled elective operations in April was 4.4 per cent, against a plan of 3 per cent.

The root cause was given as “capacity issues”. It went on: “process inefficiencies have been identified by the trust who commissioned an external company to review its utilisation of theatre space.
