FINANCE: Berkshire East primary care trust fell £2m short of its surplus target for 2010-11 after overspending on its prescribing budget and encountering delays in the establishment of an urgent care centre.
The PCT’s May board papers show that the trust recorded a modest £147,000 surplus for 2010-11.
The papers say: “The delayed implementation of an urgent care centre at Wexham Park was a key disappointment although there is now clear agreement that this will go ahead in the early part of 2011-12.
“The prescribing budget was considerably overspent, although some of this can be assumed to be due to overperformance on the Devolved Pharmaceutical Services which we do not have any control over.”
The trust said that efforts to reduce GP referrals were “bearing fruit”, along with redesigned care pathways for oral surgery and cardiology, reducing demand on acute providers.
The papers show the trust also fell short of its efficiency target under the quality, innovation, productivity and prevention agenda.
The commissioner undershot its £11.9m QIPP target by £239,000 in 2010-11.
