A House of Lords science and technology committee report on allergies has idenfied a ‘severe shortage of allergy specialists in the UK’ and that ‘clinical services lag far behind’ most of Europe.
The report confirms the huge rise in allergies in the UK and says there is inadequate provision across the NHS – with a lack of specialists in allergy and inadequate knowledge among GPs.
The report’s key recommendation is that an allergy centre should be created for each strategic health authority, headed by a full-time allergy specialist. These centres would network with other specialities related to allergy care.
