The Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland has issued new guidelines on obtaining consent for anaesthesia, saying 'two-way communication' is more important than obtaining a signature on a consent form. The guidelines include advice on managing children, mentally ill people and women in labour, and on dealing with advance directives. They also cover the area of obtaining consent for research and the use of new drugs.
