Public health minister Dawn Primarolo has unveiled a package of measures to help break down the barriers between primary care trusts and local authorities when tackling pockets of poor health.
She announced£11m for the communities for health scheme, to implement local health improvement ideas, and£2.5m for healthy communities, a scheme to help councils improve their ability to tackle health inequalities.
Ms Primarolo said: "Poor health intensifies in poor areas. This has serious effects on people's lives. To help tackle that, I'm releasing a package of£13.5m to help people in the poorest areas."
