Derek Wanless, who led the 2002 review of the NHS and last year's review of public health, has been knighted. Guys and St Thomas' Foundation trust chief executive Dr Jonathan Michael also became a knight in the new year's honours, while former former chief nursing officer Reverend Sarah Mullally was appointed a dame.

David Fillingham, director of the NHS Modernisation Agency until September, and now chief executive of Bolton Hospitals trust, became a CBE. Dr Mike Shooter, chair of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and consultant child psychiatrist, was appointed a CBE for services to the NHS in Wales.

CBEs also went to Peter Bradley, London Ambulance Service chief executive; Mary Clarke, director of nursing for City and Hackney teaching primary care trust; David Edwards, former chief executive of Cardiff and Vale trust; and Martin Gorham, National Blood Authority chief executive.
