The 2004 HSJ Awards is launched this week with the largest ever number of categories and the backing of health secretary John Reid.

The awards have 15 categories, including new ones seeking the latest innovations in the areas of clinical service redesign and self care and the expert patient. The National Institute for Clinical Excellence is also backing a new award for clinical excellence.

The winner of each category will be eligible for the health secretary's award, given to the most impressive entry. NHS chief executive Sir Nigel Crisp and the prime minister's senior policy adviser on health Simon Stevens will help to choose this overall winner.

The deadline for entries is 1 August and the awards will be presented at a gala dinner at London's Park Lane Hilton on 15 November. For more details of this year's awards, see the advertisement on pages 8-9 or telephone 020-7874 0307.
