More progress is needed on the 18-week GP referral to hospital treatment target, the British Medical Association has said.

BMA consultants committee chairman Dr Jonathan Fielden said: 'Doctors are repeatedly frustrated at being unable to treat as many people as they can, as efficiently as they can due to this excessive focus on money.

'To the one in 10 patients still waiting more than a year and one in three waiting more than five months for their treatment the financial surplus will ring hollow - invest this money back in the health service, work with us and we will aim to deliver the necessary improvements.'
