All primary care trusts in England will have to have local action plans in place for tackling violence to staff by 31 October, the British Medical Association's GPs committee chair Dr John Chisholm said last week.Dr Chisholm told the Local Medical Committees conference, the annual conference for GPs, that the Department of Health would be writing to all PCTs and strategic health authorities to insist the plans are in place by then.Dr Chisholm said investigations by GPC had shown many primary care organisations had failed to make the necessary arrangements for violent patients to be treated in safety.
