Scotland's share of additional tobacco tax revenues earmarked for health in the last Budget w i l l be targeted at ch i ldren and young people . Schemes to be funded include fresh fruit for infants and more school breakfast clubs; free toothpaste and toothbrushes for 100,000 children in deprived areas by 2001; a hotline to try to cut male suicide; new measures to target smoking among girls and people on low incomes; an extension of screening programmes.

Scotland's first public health institute will be established in Glasgow to look at the genetic and environmental impact on individual health.
