The British Medical Association seniors committee and the Department of Health consultant contract implementation team have published protocols on resolving 'outstanding difficulties on local implementation'.The protocols say that where employers and local negotiating committees have failed to resolve contract issues, seniors committee representatives and the DoH team can become involved.

The number of people who gave up smoking for four weeks rose by 38 per cent in the period from April to December 2003, compared to the number who succeeded in the same period the year before.NHS stop-smoking services figures show that 54 per cent of those who tried to give up on the programme during the period succeeded, with the most successful group of quitters being among those aged over 60.

Department of Health clinical director for patient experience in accident and emergency Jonathan Asbridge has launched a patient information toolkit which recommends the use of electronic information screens to provide patients with realtime information.Also launched is a mental healthcare checklist, which provides practical information for those looking after mentally ill patients using emergency care services.

The Department of Health has published guidance and templates on collecting patients' views of their experiences of the NHS. It has also released guidance on public information packs, which includes recommendations on key topics such as parking facilities and the use of plain language.
