The Department of Health has published guidance on 'pre and post-employment checks'of NHS employees, which says NHS organisations must obtain references before giving unconditional offers of employment, and seek explanations for gaps in employment. It also outlines the details of criminal investigations and convictions and professional regulatory inquiries that should be sought.

Eight new pilot sights for patients with chronic eye disease have been announced by health minister Rosie Winterton.The eight primary care trusts will treat patients with glaucoma, macular degeneration, and low vision.The project will be managed by the Modernisation Agency's eyecare services programme.
