Birmingham University's Health Services Management Centre has criticised the plans to develop 3,000 community matrons posts to specialise in casemanagement of long-term conditions.

A report on chronic care by published this week claims that the government is 'wrong to concentrate only on people with the most complex needs'.

The research highlighted 'conflicting evidence about the effects of case management'. It said the approach was likely to benefit those at the greatest risk of being admitted to hospital but was 'not always worthwhile for other people with long-term conditions'.
