1965-68: Minister for transport, responsible for introduction of breathalyser and seatbelts.

1968-70: Secretary of state for employment and productivity. Produced In Place of Strife and Equal Pay Act.

1974-76: Secretary of state for health and social security

1979: Elected MEP for Greater Manchester North. Leader of the Labour group.

1990: Made a life peer, Baroness Castle of Blackburn. Widowed, no children.
