Independent healthcare providers have been invited to make expressions of interest in running pilots to provide chlamydia screening in high street pharmacies.
The Department of Health is running an advertisement in today's HSJ asking for interest from the independent sector in contracts for two-year pilots in London and Cornwall, which would offer to test people aged from 16-24.
The move follows a commitment in last year's public health white paper Choosing Health.
Testing is already offered by one quarter of primary care trusts under the national chlamydia screening programme, while high street chemists Boots offers an NHS-funded service in two stores in the Wirral and is soon to offer the service in Crewe.
