NHS Confederation chief executive Dr Gill Morgan said that she agreed with the findings of a Commons health select committee report on NHS IT published today.

'We recognise most of the problems identified in the committee's report…the potential for electronic patient records to improve health services is immense. To be successful this message must be pushed forward and ensure that new IT systems deliver definite benefits for patients while allaying legitimate concerns about safeguards and security'.

The report found that hospitals have been forced to rely on increasingly outdated IT systems because of delays in implementing a major part of the national programme for IT.
