Two pharmaceutical companies have won a £155.4m contract to supply a vaccine as soon as an expected pandemic flu outbreak is confirmed.

The four-year contract has been awarded to GSK and Baxter Healthcare, which will make the vaccine available once the pandemic strain is identified and made available by the World Health Organisation.

Health minister Dawn Primarolo said: 'These contracts mean the UK is on the front foot if a flu pandemic occurs.'
