The Department of Health is recruiting a chief information officer following the departure of Richard Granger from his post as director general of IT for the NHS.

Mr Granger officially left the department last Thursday after announcing his resignation in June.

The new chief information officer will lead the development and delivery of the overall information strategy for the health and social care system.

A director of programme and systems delivery, accountable for managing the delivery of IT programmes, will also be recruited.

Matthew Swindells, who is currently interim director general for information and programme integration, will act as interim chief information officer. Gordon Hextall, who is currently chief operating officer at Connecting for Health, will act as interim director of programme and systems delivery.

Mr Hextall will oversee the day-to-day running of NHS Connecting for Health, the DH agency responsible for delivering the national IT programme.

The changes follow recommendations in the DH's ongoing informatics review, which will be published in full in the spring.
