An inquiry into allegations that a hospital threw away children's organs with rubbish has found them to be 'completely unfounded'.

The inquiry at the King's Mill Centre for Healthcare Services in north Nottinghamshire found that a technician released videos showing tissue being removed from the mortuary to the News of the World.

This action was 'primarily motivated by. . . frustration arising from a long-standing, unresolved grievance against trust management'. The tissue was taken to a laboratory. The report also found the way in which a 'backlog' of adult tissue was disposed of conformed to existing policies.

However, it found that the timing of the disposal - in the face of new guidance issued by the Department of Health at the height of concern about organ retention - was 'inappropriate'.

Trust managers were unaware of the guidance, with trust chief executive John Watkinson saying he did not receive a key letter from health secretary Alan Milburn.

Trent regional office has instructed the trust to produce an action plan to deal with 'significant local issues' regarding management, industrial relations and communications within the trust and with the DoH.
