NHS Employers has welcomed Lord Darzi's proposal to overhaul workforce planning.
In a plea to avoid a repetition of last year, which saw large numbers of NHS-trained physiotherapists graduating but unable to find posts, he called for better alignment between training and service delivery. His report says: 'Workforce planning needs to be more evidently and consistently linked with new models of care and with financial and service planning at all levels.'
An NHS Employers spokesperson said workforce planning was 'not an exact science because the pattern of services might change during the time it took to train professionals. She added: 'There is no doubt that workforce, financial and service planning need to be more closely integrated to enable employers to effectively plan their workforce. Employers also need to be able to shape local plans in partnership with their strategic health authority to get the workforce they need to provide the best services to patients.'
Lord Darzi also called for more work on clinical leadership, promising to convene a national working group to identify actions.
