A consultation on end of life care has been launched by the Department of Health.

It was developed as part of the NHS next stage review after strategic health authority pathway chairs called for a national approach.

The document sets out "quality markers" that will be used to assess how well organisations are caring for people at the end of their life.

The consultation says the markers could be used as self-assessments for primary care trusts, by regulators, or as part of a peer review process.

They cover areas such as public awareness, availability of services and workforce planning.

The consultation closes on 6 February next year.
