The Department of Health has published the first national standards for the NHS heart and lung transplant service. It has also announced an additional£1.1m investment in the service, which will be used to appoint senior and supporting staff to seven hospitals across the UK.The development of the guidelines follows a Commission for Health Improvement recommendation to establish new commissioning arrangements and standards. Junior health minister Lord Hunt said they would help to maintain 'the highest levels of quality and safety'.
