A new pilot scheme to give freshfood vouchers to low-income families has been judged a success and will be rolled out nationally in November.

The NHS in Devon and Cornwall has been piloting the Healthy Start Scheme, which offers vouchers for milk, fresh fruit and vegetables, and infant formula for young children. The scheme will be rolled out across the UK in November, replacing the old Welfare Food Scheme, introduced during the Second World War.
