A petition of 50,000 names was delivered to Number 10 last week by stroke patients urging the government to make stroke care a priority. The national service framework for older people says all stroke patients should be treated by stroke units by 2004.Currently only one in four stroke patients stays in such a unit, according to figures from the Royal College of Physicians.A survey carried out by the Stroke Association found significant gaps in provision and evidence that many units were too small to accommodate those in need of care.
