Great Ormond Street Hospital's new chair is to be former minister Baroness Blackstone.

The peer, who was arts minister and education minister, will take up the post in January, on an annual salary of£23,020.

She said: "I hope that my experience in government, in the academic world, and in education and training more broadly, can support Great Ormond Street Hospital and its partner, the UCL Institute of Child Health, in their work to combine first class research, high level training and excellent clinical practice to benefit patients and their families."

Baroness Blackstone takes over from current chair Sir Cyril Chantler, who has occupied the role since 2000.

Trust chief executive Jane Collins said: "We're delighted to welcome Tessa Blackstone, whose breadth of experience in public service will be of great value to us.

"Sir Cyril Chantler has been an outstanding chair for eight years, and agreed to extend his term while his successor was found. He believes, and I agree, that we are in excellent hands with Tessa."
