The public will be more involved in monitoring the performance of the NHS in Scotland following the creation of the Clinical Standards Board for Scotland, according to chair Lord Patel.

Members of the public will make up half the 10-strong board and will be on inspection teams visiting hospitals.

The board may also introduce questionnaires for patients and their families, asking them to evaluate the service they received.

Working groups will consider what standards should be set for different areas of care. Trusts providing these services will be assessed against the standards to ensure a quality service.
