We would be delighted if the total contract value of the South West electronic patient record collaboration was as little as the£20m you reported (news, IT Update, 16 March). Given that the project will provide EPR level 3+ for virtually every trust in South West region, the costs will be much greater than this.

The initial solutions will not be electronic health records, as you report. Rather, the focus will be on EPRs which grow towards EHRs over time.

Finally, the project has not taken anything like 18 months to place a tender in the Official Journal of the European Communities.

We have a public website at www.exeter.nhsia.nhs.uk/procure which explains the project in more detail and will continue to report its progress.
