Health visitors are to have equal membership on the Nursing and Midwifery Council and will be covered by a special part of the regulatory body's register. The measures, which follow strong campaigning by health visitors, were announced as health minister John Hutton introduced legislation on the new body this week. But the Royal College of Midwives branded the move as 'unacceptable', as midwives would 'now find themselves outnumbered' two to one by nurses.Mr Hutton also introduced an order to create a Health Professions Council to replace the Council for Professions Supplementary to Medicine.
