Young women with type-1 diabetes are over 30 times more likely to die from heart disease than women without the condition, according to research presented to the Diabetes UK annual conference last week.

Lead researcher Dr Susan Laing from the Institute of Cancer Research said it was essential that doctors were aware of the increased risks attached to diabetes so they can avoid unnecessary deaths. But she said it was important to take account of the low risks of heart disease for all women aged between 15 and 44.The research was part of the Diabetes UK Cohort study, which has followed 23,000 people with diabetes for up to 30 years.
