Health secretary Patricia Hewitt has written to chancellor Gordon Brown asking for an increase in taxes on alcopops and other drinks favoured by teenagers to curb binge drinking.

Earlier this month Ms Hewitt launched the 'Know Your Limits' campaign against excessive drinking in the under-25 age group. In June, the Information Centre for health and social care released figures showing that hospital admissions of patients with alcoholic poisoning rose by 60 per cent in the decade to 2004-05.
