An organisation has been launched to draw attention to the issue of high blood pressure, which affects 10 million people in the UK, is the most important cause of strokes and is one of three key factors in heart attacks. The Blood Pressure Association says almost half of all individuals with high blood pressure are not diagnosed. Of those that are, only half are treated and even fewer have their problem controlled properly. Association chair Graham McGregor, professor of cardiovascular medicine at St George's Hospital in London, said its main aim was to lobby for better control 'in order that the appalling toll of strokes and heart attacks can be reduced'.
